Front End Salary Guide 2021
Front End Engineers / Developers are paid on par with any other developer out there. So, if you have a general assumption that you should settle for less compared to Back End, Data Scientist, etc, give that a break. I am a Front End Engineer and never ever I have been paid less than other devs.
Before jumping onto the salaries, you can read Must have skills for Frontend Devs in 2021. The most desirable skills Include ES6, any one of the Javascript Frameworks, GIT/SVN, SASS/SCSS & Typescript.
Salaries have various components like the base salary, on hire stocks, annual refreshers, performance bonus or variable pay, and sometimes joining bonus.
Here is how you can calculate your total annual salary for the first year:
Base Salary + Joining bonus for 1st year + Target Performance Bonus + On Hire Stocks for 1st year
For example:
If you are offered a base of 100$, joining bonus 20 (1st year) + 20 (2nd year) + target performance bonus is 10 % and On Hire Stocks 200$ vested 10%, 15%, 25%, 50% over 4 years.
Then,
Total Compensation = 100 (Base) + 20 (Joining Bonus) + 10 (Performance Bonus) + 20 (Stocks vested for 1st Year) = 150 $
Some companies may not have certain components. Now, we have understood the basic maths. Let’s jump into what is an average compensation across the world:
Country | Entry Level (0 – 2) | Mid (3 – 5) | Senior (6+) |
United States | 150 k – 250 k | 400 k – 250 k | 400 k + |
United Kingdom | 50 k – 150 k | 100 k – 250 k | 250 k + |
Germany | 50 k – 120 k | 80 k – 150 k | 120 k + |
Netherland | 50 k – 100 k | 80 k – 150 k | 120 k + |
India | 30 k – 60 k | 40 k – 80 k | 80 k + |
Singapore | 50 k – 100k | 100 k – 250 k | 200 k + |
Japan | 40 k – 100 k | 80 k – 160 k | 150 k + |
You must be wondering that there is a lot of difference in pay based on location. A major reason for that is the cost of living, local tax structure, and so on. But overall, this is what you should expect in any good company. Extremes of the Frontend Salaries have been trimmed down in this table.
If you are being paid less, that is perfectly fine as long as you are learning the latest Tech Stack. However, if you think that your company is not offering you any learning and you are paid less, please switch. When to switch your current Job as a Software Engineer?
